So I've installed a dependency from source since I needed to customize its config (couldn't figure out how to do this to a package). Synaptic doesn't recognize that it's installed and the program I want to install wants to reinstall this dependency.
Specifically, I'm trying to get Kdenlive, and FFmpeg is the dependency. Any ideas?

Did you see this?
HOWTO: Install and use the latest FFmpeg and x264 (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=786095)

Yes, I have. I don't have a problem with FFmpeg. I'd just like a straight answer of whether you can install package programs with source dependencies or if you have to compile everything from source or install everything as a package.
I already have ffmpeg and mlt installed from source. I've spent hours on kdenlive though, and a package would be so much better at this point.
