Ubuntu install problems on Toshiba Satellite A10 notebook

Hi guys, I just installed Ubuntu 9.1 on a Toshiba A10 Satellite notebook, and get the following error message on bootup... after selecting 2.6.31-14-generic from the GRUB menu.


error: no such device: 5790f427-7bea-4ecf-b487-2c6a347d5681
What does this mean, and how can I fix it? It's not clear how to enter Toshiba's BIOS either, so I haven't been able to get in there and poke around with settings yet.

Any ideas?

I should add that the system works fine, when I boot directly off the Ubuntu 9.1 CD.

How frustrating! :(
