OK folks I'm stumped. I had a previous lucid install where cdrom permissions did not seem to be any problem, but in the current clean install (and new user) k3b can not complete a burn because optical drives, including an external USB are owned by root.

I've rummaged the web for solutions the past couple days but nothing usable comes to light. I tried looking at /etc/init.d/udev as suggested by one source but find nothing there that is relevant.

Can someone kindly explain why optical drives are default owned by root and what I need to do to change that? I could run k3b as root, but I shouldn't need to.

Thanks,
CT
