View Full Version : [ubuntu] upgrade from 32bit to 64bit need help

hi, as a new user of ubuntu ,i think i had made a mistake while i installed ubuntu , i installed 32bit which is now only using 3gb out of my 6gb ram which i have in my sony laptop. so whould like to upgrage my buntu from 32bit to 64 bit .
whould be thank full if you can give me some clear details of how to do it .
and i would prefer not to loose my data, in my laptop during this process

I believe you need to do a clean install of a 64-bit system. There's no way to upgrade from one to the other.

No need to upgrade to 64-bit if you just want to support 6GB RAM on 32-bit ;-) Just install PAE Kernel.

And there is no direct path of upgrading from 32-bit to 64-bit.

hey thank you thank you thank you :):):). it worked and now my total ram is in use :).
hey do i need to know any think else, which are to be installed which will improve my system performance.

No tweaking is needed by Ubuntu to make it run faster. It is alwasy fast enough for me on a default install. Just make sure that you've installed graphics drivers for your card.

Not needed by an average user but you've got 6GB of RAM so I recommended it to you. Go through the advantages/disadvantages if you decide to give it a go.
