turned off desktop icons and lost compiz features

I use awn, I turned off desktop icons entirely (as described here, under "turn all desktop icons off" http://www.junauza.com/2010/06/how-to-hide-desktop-icons-in-ubuntu.html) but now I don't get the sphere effect when switching windows, I get the "desktop cube" (I use 4 desktops), but not the rounded sphere (as set up in effects-cube reflections and deformations). Also I lost the partial transparency of the sphere. Is there anything I can do aside from turning the desktop icons back on?
