See signature. I install software from other sources, but that doesn't mean I trust them. I don't trust the Ubuntu repositories either.

Could not find proper alternatives in the official repos:
Pinta PPA(GTK mspaint clone)
mplayer-mt PPA(to play 1080p smoothly)
Wine PPA(To have the latest version)
Caffeine PPA(Using a laptop, no other way to turn off/on power saving comfortably)
Dell PPA(laptop stuff)
Google(chrome for when firefox is buggy)
Pidgin PPA(to have latest bug fixes)
Opera(for when firefox is buggy and in a google-paranoia mood)
VirtualBox(no other way of running IE well)

no, he codes everything himself in binary.
Question: how do you compile a compiler? Do you just have to write a compiler in machine language?

As a newbie, I only use Ubuntu's repos. Don't want to mess my OS like the last time with all the broken dependencies.

I don't use Ubuntu myself, but I swear by RPM Fusion (http://rpmfusion.org/) on RPM systems. If I use a dpkg system I normally just use the official Debian repository.

GCC is written mostly in C. I guess that once you have the first C compiler your can use it to make more and don't need to use assembly anymore.
