gave up waiting for root device (newbie)

hi guys i am really strugling here in install ubuntu server 10.4.1 surely on one of you must be able to help a new user with little experince of linux over come this problem i havew reinstalled numerous times but keep hitting the same problem the install goes fine untill i go for a reboot then the problems are it gets stuck at "gave up waiting for root device" if you type exit then hit enter the server then boots but it is not a godd solution as the server is headless and will be maintained via putyy or webmin i have looked on these forums but am still stuggling please help
