I always find it best to copy anything I want to keep to an external HDD & do a clean install.
just read some of the posts about help wanted after a failed upgrades. updates are fine even new kernels but upgrades Ive always had problems.

Unless you have a separate /home partition an upgrade could potentially destroy your data in the event that something goes wrong.

Backup important data and go for a clean install.

So far I've never had a problem with data loss or corruption with upgrading my distribution through Ubuntu. Of course it is really important that you do make backups of all your important data to an external drive or to CDs/DVDs in case something does go wrong. But if you can boot into a LiveCD and do a fresh install, then you may as well do that. Of course, you'll have to reinstall all of the programs and packages that you have installed in the last two years...

According to the system requirements, 438mb RAM is plenty for Xubuntu 10.04:

Yes, it should keep all of your programs and files intact, with the exception of programs you have installed from outside the Ubuntu repositories--the update process will disable 3rd party repositories to prevent things getting weird. :)

Xubuntu 10.04 will work, but if you want something really fast, go for Lubuntu:

Whenever I do something significant to my OS I make sure I have a backup of important files.

Is there something you need or would like to have in the current release?

If not, 8.04 will be supported with security updates until 11.04 is released.

thanks guys i think i will backup and install from cd i have a heck of alot of games though but i dont mind installing them again
