Hi All,

An issue that I keep reading at various internet sites about linux and gaming is the lack of commercial games that run in linux natively. A few months ago I noticed at LinuxGames (http://www.linuxgames.com) a PC game called Robin Hood The Legend of Sherwood (see RobinHood-Game (http://www.robinhood-game.com)) that was released for linux. Although I immediately downloaded the demo, it has taken me several months to run it and see what it is like. After spending two nights (no more than an hour each), I am quite impressed. It has received decent ratings at various gaming review sites (The Armchair Umpire (http://www.armchairempire.com/Reviews/PC%20Games/robin-hood-legend-sherwood.htm), The Gamers Temple (http://www.gamerstemple.com/games2/000408/000408r01.asp), and Zen Gamer (http://www.zengamer.com/review.php?revid=78). It is nice to see a developer release a game for linux. What I wonder is whether the linux community has responded and tried the demo. I am curious to know how many Ubuntu users has tried out the demo to this relatively high quality game.

Happy Gaming to All

I tested the demo this morning and it worked fine without any problems whatsoever - just ran "sh <cant remember filename>" which resulted in an extracted folder with the files needed. Started the executable, and was hurling arrows at guards within a couple of seconds. Never saw the icons the installer mentioned, but that's a minor detail anyway.

it is pretty good. basically it looked like a game where you use different skills to achieve a mission. in the same vein(sort of) as lemmings or more appropriately the lost vikings minus the puzzles. the graphics were pretty good, however it didn't really capture me and i quit after 5-10 minutes. for a game to capture my attention is rare, for me to purchase it is even rarer. though i have purchased all the games that i play that require a purchase(ut2004,etc).

its good one for me, I'm thinking to purchase it.
I'm not into fast play games, I love thos kind of games, days and days to find out how to do something, hope to find monkey land version for Linux.

cool. if you like puzzle games perhaps you should checkout pingus. it is a lemmings clone, it is quick to get into but the later levels get challenging.

another game that is hard to master is battle for wesnoth. you might like that one.

Thank you Jdodson, installing in progress, do you know any similar game or a cloned game of Red alert or Generalz?
also any good online/Offline Chess game? I was in love with Chess Master.

Thank you Jdodson and Jad for your thoughts about Robin Hood, The Legend of Sherwood. I have not yet found a manual, which I miss (yes, I do read manuals, hehe). I wish there was a tutorial about strategy. Obviously, I have not played this type of game and need a bit of instruction. However, I find that the game looks good. I have not gotten very far in it, but if I take to it, I will certainly support the company that has released it.

Jad,

Good question. After a bit of digging, I am a bit shocked at what I found. Here are vendors from where Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood can be purchased

URL: E.P.I.C. Interactive (https://ssl.kundenserver.de/order.titan-computer.com/epic/linux.html) OS: linux PRICE: 39.95 Euros/52.22 US Dollars

URL: GuyBuys (http://www.guybuys.com/2152313.html) OS: macintosh PRICE: $28.95

URL: CompUSA (http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?ref=froogle&pfp=froogle&product_code=316972&cm_ven=froogle&cm_cat=&cm_pla=&cm_ite=feed) OS: windows PRICE: $9.99 (jewel case only)

URL: EB Games (http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/228641.asp?site=Froogle) OS: undeclared (probably windows) PRICE: $6.99

URL: WalMart (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?dest=9999999997&product_id=2018063&sourceid=0100000030660804502498) OS: undeclared (probably windows) PRICE: $29.82

I have searched but unable to find a vendor other than E.P.I.C. Interactive (http://www.epic-interactive.com/) for the linux version of this game.

What amazes me is the price difference between the Linux version, Mac and Windows. The Mac version is approximately 3x more expensive than the lowest available Windows version, while the Linux version is approximately 5x more expensive (partly due to the exchange rate of Euros to US dollars). Nevertheless, I can't imagine paying more than $50 for a game that is more than 12 months old (I actually have never spent that kind of money on a game).

So, what to make of this? It could be that E.P.I.C. Interactive (http://www.epic-interactive.com/) is interested in marketing their product to the European consumer exclusively.

What I am curious to know is whether E.P.I.C. Interactive (http://www.epic-interactive.com/) will provide the linux binary in exchange for purchasing their game at fair market value in the United States?

In other words, if I purchase Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood (http://www.epic-interactive.com/Website2004/englisch/Projektseiten/robin/robin.html) for ~$30, will E.P.I.C. give me the linux version? I think this is much more reasonable that purchasing from their website.

Interesting....

Jad, keep me posted via this thread if you hear from your contact. I will post if I investigate this further.

I have forwarded their reply to Epic InterActive. now waiting to get a reply from Epic.

Thank you ahood for your investigation, its really weird pricing system.
but what I'm thinking of is, their consider the linux version new not 12 month old game, it seems they are targeting Other operating systems as a refine of the their marketing plans to increase the sales, or a recycle of a product to get more sales.

Epic InterActive reply

Hello Jad,

The Linux version does cost EURO 39,95. If you order it through our shop you will have to add 6 EUR postage to it. We currently do not have a Linux partner in that region, sorry. A download version is currently only available for the Apple Macintosh.

I love these type of games and I am still finishing of spellbounds older game Desperados. Their levels take a really long time to get through. Bloody good value for money.

I do think that the pricing difference between Mac/ Linux and PC is right however. They may see it as new, but I don't. Well lets see what happens.

For anyone else looking for the manual (I did find a few elements of the game confusing, myself), you can find it here:

http://www.mytelus.com/games/details.do?gameid=360&bundleid=5

You'll find a link to the PDF on the right-hand side of the page. 'Tis for the Windows version, but alas we can't have everything.

best regards,
dj

Just gave this game a shot. Pretty good! Though for some reason the installer wanted to change the permissions of everything in my home folder not owned by me. I do a lot of sudo stuff, but only in certain places, so I KNOW where things need to be owned by root-- and that's the stuff that it was trying to change.

Robin Hood is also available from www.jbox.ca (http://www.jbox.ca/product.php?productid=21&cat=0&page=1).

It's nice to see more and more games coming onto the market for the Linux platform.

Cheers,
