Hello guys, this is my first time using Ubuntu after 10 years of windows. So I am pretty much a novice. There are no .exe files which you just click on and then follow the instructions like windows. I'm having troubles installing my sql server. I need to install mysql-5.1.50-linux-i686-glibc23.tar.gz. The website is http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mirror.php?id=392747#mirrors. I tried some commands in the terminal but it's of no help.

I also need to install earlier versions of firefox (at least before 3.6). So I downloaded 3.5.13 from the mozilla website but have no clue on how to install it.

Can someone please help me?

Mot applications can be installed from the repositories. Is not recommended to download stuff from the web, so always check the repositories first, to see if the software is available. Mozilla is a safe source tho and I download from the myself when I want a version that is not in the repositories.

The "equivalent" of Windows .exe in Ubuntu is .deb. It installs with double click, just like in Windows. For more info on installation methods see https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/add-applications/C/index.html

For mySQL see the post above. For Firefox see the Installing Other Versions (http://firefox-tutorials.blogspot.com/2010/05/installing-other-versions.html) tutorial.
