Not trying to copy mac os or anything, but I'm looking for a nice, sleek dock that looks like the one in SL. Any ideas?

There are several popular options available.
My preference is to use AWN (Avant Window Navigator). I have found it to be extremely straight forward to install/use/tweak. It is available via Software Center.

Here is the related launchpad.net entry:
https://launchpad.net/awn

A screenshot showing a version of this application I was recently running is attached. It is not difficult to customize appearance/icons/etc.

Would you mind telling me how to make it look like that. I really like how yours looks. :)

Certainly.

AWN Theme - (based on) http://gnome-look.org/content/downlo...1&tan=27207129 (http://gnome-look.org/content/download.php?content=120804&id=1&tan=27207129)

(These are DL links. If you click them, you'll download archives containing an icon theme and an AWN theme.)

I like Cairo-Dock, but I don't know if you can make it glassy looking like that, or I might not have tried. It has animations though which I like.

Did anyone mention Docky (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Docky)? :)

I've always found Cairo to be messy and garish, I prefer Awn.

The applets have issues, but I thought it was pretty straight forward to setup, and I like the animations like the fire works. I had a bad experience with AWN the first I tried using it, I forget what it was, but Cairo works fine.

AWN used to be my favorite. I now use Docky, which has less customization but more reliability.

My Wife has a MacBook Air and when I installed Docky the other day I noticed one of the themes (don't know which one cause I went back to AWN) looks almost exactly like the dock on her Mac. I was quite surprised.

I prefer AWN because it has a couple of extra features (custom icons) that aren't in docky yet. However, Docky is a great dock that does what you want and is incredibly fast compared to some of the others.

I vote for Docky. It's sexy and simple.

CairoDock is the only one, that can both look and function, like a mac dock.
Docky is the most stable, and simolest to use, but in uses mono.
AWN has the best feel, but it isn't a real dock, since you can't dock files and folders in it.

So which is best, depeds on what you want to do.

Oh diddums. Not intending to turn this into a mono flame war, but that is pretty poor reason to not recommend Docky.

But I find AWN fine for my needs. I tried Docky, found it a bit too simple for me. Ever since 0.4.0, AWN has been pretty awesome.

DockBarX: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/DockbarX?content=101604

Not exactly a dock I suppose - it's icons (with added functionality) to replace windowList, with window previews. More like W7 than OSX (although DockBarX has been around longer than W7 ;)). No effects required.

Install couldn't be easier:
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dockbar-main/ppa
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install dockbarx
Add to a panel.

awn from the ppa, it has all the features used in mac & then some.

i love the stacks feature for watching certain folders.
also i don't use compiz, i use metacity for composting & awn has the settings for animations.

also gnomenu & dockbarx work in awn, you can even replace gnome-panel with awn it has the main features.

Cairo-Dock 2.2 if you want something pretty, easy to use, and yet with a lot of features.
But really, try them all and decide by yourself ;-)

Best advice right here. Try them all and see what works.

I personallty love Cairo-Dock (GLX-Dock). It was a breeze for me to customize and get working the way I wanted it to.

Docky is obviously the best option as it is the brain child of DBO.
