Getting the error "The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you many investigate the problem or try installing again" while trying to install Ubuntu.

These are the details:

Start install from cd, using image ubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-i386.iso

Install proceeds to purple screen that says Ubuntu on it.

Continues on for 8 minutes, then error stating "The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you many investigate the problem or try installing again"

I press OK on the error message, goes to black background screen with message on top of screen that says "(Process:325): GLib-Warning **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)"

More errors fill the screen, generally they say "Buffer I/O error on device"

The install continues to a purple screen, makes a music chime-y noise, then purple screen of death for 40 minutes and I kill the install.

My computer: Windows 7 Home Premium, Sony Vaio, 64 bit, Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6600 @ 2.2 GHz

Help?

This is a well-known error. It is hard to diagnose exactly what is wrong, as you can see here:

Can you install 9.10?

I was using an old, cheap CD-ROM for the image, so I decided to try burning a new disc and somehow the installation worked with no problem.

I used the same .iso file, the same CD burner, and tried installing Ubuntu on the same laptop - and it worked with the new CD. Glad I got lucky.
