Hi, I'm a linux rookie, just downloaded it, not the beta but stable.. 10.04 i think. and i'm having trouble getting enlightenment gui to work. i terminaled:

sudo apt-get install e16
Which worked i think.
I have e16 alongside e16gnome and e16kde in /usr/share/xsession.
When i terminal just "e16" it says that i have another windows manager already running.
And some forums say: log out and bottom left change some settings bottom left.. Well, I don't have a settings button there.
Yeah i just really don't know how to do it.
Thanks for time

Log out and you have a Session button on the bottom of the screen after you click your username. Select whichever DE you want to login to and then type your password and hit enter.

Enlightenment is so bad BTW, when I used it I had massive problems I couldn't unlock the login preferences in it or anything to switch it off from logging in to Enlightenment I ended up just making a new account and booting Gnome then deleting Enlightenment. It's way overrated IMO, I see SOME advantages in it, but really the majority of it is buggy and ugly.

@ Cutgah

The version E16 that you have tried to install is a very very old desktop.
it has some nice little features when run with Gnome but I doubt this is the one you
were after trying out.

@ Gaygerbil

The version Enlightenment that you seem to be speaking of is also old but newer than the first one and is DR17

But there is a later version ....... and its a separate download and goes on its own partition.

(Both of the top two installs are so far out of date its not even worth trying them. IMHO)

If you are trying to see how good or bad it is you need to get the Distro .... and install it separately .....

Go to Distro-Watch (http://distrowatch.com/) if you really want to try it out the later version is called Elive (http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=elive) .... and its number 58 on the list at this moment in time ....
in my experience it has not got the usability of Gnome.
( The last I saw they had started charging for it too ..... )

By adding Cairo-Dock to Gnome ..... you will get a much better experience without the worry of making a mess of your current install.

So my advice is stick with Gnome and add Cairo-dock to it.

( Sabayon - Zorin - PinguyOS ) are much better if you want to try other distros out too ...... but I would put them on a clean partition
alongside Ubuntu, or you could install Mandriva 2010 and the old version of DR17 is an easy install from the Mandriva package manager
but I do think that you may be disappointed as it is so old now - Elive is the one that should be better but it has a awkward interface IMHO.

Elive =/= enlightenment.

Enlightenment is just a WM (window manager), not a distro. E16/E17 are avaible for free (dont need to pay for elive to run enlightenment).

IMO elive sucks. I've used it a few times, it seemed less stable than debian + E17, and sod paying $15 for something you can do yourself.

Before anybody cuts in with "you can d/l and install 'testing' versions for nothing", "its legal under the GPL" and "you can avoid paying for elive, all you have to do is review it on your blog" etc...yes, your right. But IMO there should be a nice big warning you will have to pay to install when you go to d/l the stable version, its a rude suprise to find otu afterward like I did.

I ran DR17 on a debian base for a while from SVN, and IIRC I got the directions from here-

http://debe17.com/

I'm 100% sure it should be installable on ubuntu, but I dont know where any decent directions/how tos for that.

BTW, gnome + Cario Dock is NOTHING like E17. It looks quite different, and enlightenment is meant to be 'light', gnome ubuntu is a long way from light. E17 should run on systems that would make current ubuntu gnome versions throw up its it little hands in the air and say 'I cant work with this!'
