well.. I just noticed a couple of days ago that I can type signs with Alt + <number> key combinations in linux... this isnt something I normaly do so thats why it took so long to notice...

In windows you can type ALT + 0171 and that would result in this sign: »
In linux nothing happens however... can anyone tell me how I would go about doing the same thing in Linux? :-?

This is something that I need too, does anyone have any ideas?

True, there aren't any Alt + number combinations, but there's a charmap. Applications, Accessories, Character Map.

If that still inconveniences you, you could always right click on any panel, left click Add To Panel, left click Character Pallette, and customize a list of characters you normally use. Or you could right click on the panel, left click Add To Panel, left click Keyboard Indicator and use a different keyboard layout (like one from Spain, France, Italy, etc).
