hi there

I'm new to Ubuntu, and I just installed Okular but the pdf files are still opened with the DocumentViewr. At right click, I've choosed open with..Okular and checked "Remember this application for PDF document", but no positive result.

Can you advice me how to choose which is the default application for pdf(or any other file type, as a general rule)?

try the following:
In Nautilus, right click on the file and choose Properties from the menu that appears. The Properties dialog opens.

Click on the Open With tab. A list of applications appears.

Select the default application you want for the file type. If the application is not on the list, use the Add button to add the application to the list.

I did that, then I posted a question here

when you right click the file - what does the first item say - "open with okular"?

If it does, can you start okular and then open up the PDF? If this doesn't work then I would summise your PDF is invalid, or okular cannot read/display your PDF.
