I have a Toshiba Satellite a55-s106. It used to have Ubuntu on it, but I had some issues, so I did a fresh install of Win XP. But, since I had every intention of putting Ubuntu back on, I partitioned the hard drive and installed XP on the first partition, leaving the second partition blank. I would like to put a fresh install of the newest Ubuntu on the second partition, but I'm not sure how. Do I just pop the install disc in and it will install fine? Do I have to do anything with the partition? Also, are there and bugs in the newest Ubuntu that I would have problems with? Thanks in advance!

You can either delete the partition you have made and install to the largest free space per the link above.

Or you can add a swap partition and a data or /home partitions. If you want those you have to create partitions in advance and use manual install to choose the partitions.

Partitioning basics with some info on /data older but still relevant

Lucid very similar to Karmic, (maverick a lot different)
