i've got 10.04 xbuntu installed on my old laptop and just trying to load firefox and pandora works most of the time but it freezes up about once an hour due to memory problems...

so my question is, how can i reduce memory and still run pandora... all i want is a music box on my old laptop...

How much memory do you have? Lubuntu seems to work nicely with 256 MB.

There are music players (I know, it's not Pandora) which can run from a command line, so they can run on the Server edition with no GUI. I saw something in Full Circle Magazine, so you could Google it.

I'm using Xubuntu, also with 256 -210MB if you take into account shared graphics.
I've found the lightest GUI music application is Audacious. I haven't looked into any command line players. (I know, not Pandora)
But if you want to cut down on mem usage, you should look into some other web browsers.
I use Midori -Uses about 10mb memory, as opposed to fire foxes 20MB.

Oh, I forgot to mention this one - Pithos! I think this totally fits the bill for you.

Enjoy! I know I do :)

Old thread, but this can be done quite well.

Thinkpad 600X, Pentium !!! 500MHZ, 384MB RAM.
Wireless via an Atheros ath5k based PCMCIA card.

Still partying like it's 1999 with Xubuntu 10.04LTS. Currently listening to Pandora via Pithos.

It also plays DVDs via Xine and serves as a print server. I occasionally use Midori if I need a web browser.

The key to this particular laptop is to make sure that the xorg.conf file is correct. Xorg does support accelerated video on the Neomagic MagicMedia 256ZX video card via the neomagic driver, but only 2D and only at 16bpp. If anyone needs the xorg.conf, it's below.

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf(5) manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
