"matrix_ver_1.0" does not appear to be a valid theme. its a gdm theme of gnome-look.org would i need to get a certain type of gdm?

I believe he/she means GDM theme, not GTK theme etc. GDM theme is for the login manager and that feature is not in use anymore for some reason Im not sure why but hasn't been in awhile. A little googling might find why. Can still change things but its not as easy as it was.
