Hi mates.
First, I'm sorry for my bad english, I'll try to do my best.
As I didn't have helping answers from the french community I decided to come here :).

I'm having serious troubles to install ubuntu-10.04.1.
My raid is an hardware raid with intel chipset.

Note that win7 is already installed and working with my raid.
I made some space from windows, to install Ubuntu (40gb).

First, I run the installer, everything seems to be fine.
I choose to install Ubuntu were there is the most space free (sorry, I'm not sure about the real terms used there).

Then my partition with the vista loader appears. So the installer can see my raid, and should work fine (everything is detected correctly).

But once I'm in the end of the installation (around 95%), a pop-up appears, and tells me that Grub can't install in /dev/sda and it's a fatal error.

I can choose an another destination, but it doesn't seems to work.

What did I miss ? I hope you will find an answer, thanks in advance ! :)

Grub cannot install to /dev/sda2 if it is one of the disks in raid and it is fatal only if you don't fix it. You need to reinstall grub as given in the following: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling GRUB 2

Some comments to help. In /dev/mapper you will find listed all the symbolic links - the raid followed by all its individual partitions (ignore control). The partition you are trying to mount from the live cd is the symbolic link for the raid partition you installed to - ie /dev/mapper/<yourinstallpartitionRAID#>. The location you are trying to place the grub boot loader on is the raid name.

Post if you need more information. Good luck.

Thank you for your answer, but I'm totally lost. I'm actually installing Linux for the first time so my knowledge is very small.

-Do I need to install it from the live CD as I did before ? And then, when the error show up, I select the option to not install Grub. This is it ?
-Then I have to install it manually as written in your link ?

And what I don't understand in your message, is this part :

In /dev/mapper you will find listed all the symbolic links - the raid followed by all its individual partitions (ignore control) Theses links are links to my individuals hdd arn't they ?
So this mapping is the symbolic name of my raid, isn't it ?

The partition you are trying to mount from the live cd is the symbolic link for the raid partition you installed to - ie /dev/mapper/<yourinstallpartitionRAID#>

The location you are trying to place the grub boot loader on is the raid nameWhat do you mean ? That I'm not aiming the raid by choosing "/dev/mapper/<MyInstallpartitionRAID#>" but only his symbolic name ?

If so, how can I make it aim the raid correctly ?

Thanks for your help, and again, I'm really sorry for my bad english =).

Go to this site: http://sourceforge.net/project/platformdownload.php?group_id=250055

There you will find a downloadable and executable Boot Info Script. Follow the instructions on the site to run it and post the results here. It will give us enough information about your system so that we can better tell you how to fix it.

In windows you would never expect to work directly with you raid. Win 7 especially recognizes it and automatically installs the drivers so that you can use your disks in a raid. In linux, instead of a driver, a program called dmraid fill the same purpose. With 10.04 on the process becomes more automatic. Unfortunately there are still some things you have to do to overcome some of the shortcomings that still exists. This requires you to learn more about how raid works in your system.

One of these shortcomings is that the 10.04.1 installer often doesn't properly install the grub 2 bootloader which you need to select and load any program on you computer. This is fixable and what we have to fix. The results from running the boot info script will provide enough information so that we can guide you in fixing it. Have you read any part of the grub2 documentation I pointed you to?

Okay, I'm back and ready to try all this.
I'm booting to my linux live cd right now and executing this script.
I'll post my results once I'll have reinstalled ubuntu.

Hoping you can help me with it :)
Oh and I forget to say that the 8gb partition is my usb key, on which I'm running the actual live ubuntu.
It seems to be the sdc drive.
I'm afraid we can only see boot information from this key. Or maybe I'm (certainly ?) wrong.

Edit 2 : In Gparted, it only see /dev/sda - /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc.
Which are : My raid hdd1 and hdd2, and my ubuntu usb live key. No raid is detected here.

Edit 3 : Okay, this is what I tried :
- sudo mount /dev/mapper/isw_bafdiffaia_Red5 /mnt
- sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/mapper/isw_bafdiffaia_Red5

But here is the output of this last command :

You have a memory leak (not released memory pool):

You have a memory leak (not released memory pool):

You have a memory leak (not released memory pool):

/usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea..
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and its use is discouraged..
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: error: if you really want blocklists, use --force.
You have a memory leak (not released memory pool):
[0x1c65c00If we forget the memory leak cause we don't really care here, it suggests to isntall Grub to the MBR, how can we do that please ?

I also tried with : "sudo grub-setup -d /media/574bf494-7397-4964-9721-cb792f76eaa5/boot/grub /dev/mapper/isw_bafdiffaia_Red5"
Same error as before.

So I used the --force argument.
Then if I want to use : sudo update-grub , it says : cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?)
same for : sudo grub-mkconfig -o /media/574bf494-7397-4964-9721-cb792f76eaa5/boot/grub/grub.cfg
And I'm sure it is mounted (/dev/mapper/isw_bafdiffaia_Red5 is mounted)

The correct command should have been:

sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/mapper/isw_bafdiffaia_Red

Remember, the boot leader has to be written to the name that represent the entire array.

You just about got it on your own - congratulation. With this one fix you ought to be able to boot. Don't forget to mount your partition first.

"installation finished". This mean that it worked like a charm this way

But I still can't write :

"sudo update-grub" :

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo update-grub
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?).
I tried to remount it :

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo umount /mnt
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/mapper/isw_bafdiffaia_Red5 /mnt
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo update-grub
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?).

You should run up-date grub booted to your hard disk. Or, maybe, try 'sudo update-grub /mnt'?

sudo update-grub /mnt doesn't work, I already tried.

Maybe it's because my English is bad, but I don't understand the first part of your sentence, :(, sorry.
Now when my computer boot, I have a Grub prompt, and that's it. I don't know what to do with it. it's because there is no os list to load.

GOT IT !!! :D

Here is what I did :
I rebooted (not sure if it was necessary)

then I typed :

Mount your partition
sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev
sudo mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc
sudo mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys
sudo chroot /mnt
dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc

Then I followed what was asked me on this new screen. I didn't change anything in it (except that I choose my raid in the list) .
Then I rebooted, and voilà, all my partitions are now bootable.

You deserve the golden medal of the year for your patience. Thanks a lot :).

I try all the tests prposed by devoluti0n & ronparent grub 2 install works until where I have to install:
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/UUID_nb /media/UUID_nb
here it answer invalid location .....
The script works bu I can't see the result.....

Could you help me ?

Sorry my poor english.
