I have searched, I have read the great unified desktop effects thread, and I can't figure out how to change my desktop cube to a sphere. Please help.

Install compiz-fusion-plugins-extra, load up System > Preferences > CompizConfig Settings Manager and look for Cube Reflection and Deformation and set as required.

There is a plugin called Wallpaper in the Utility section of CompizConfig Settings Manager, but I'm not sure you'll get it working in a recent version of gnome such as you are running.

Yeah, I've seen those instructions in a few places, what I don't see is evidence that it works well. Assuming you are happy with the side effects of disabling "show desktop" I hope it works for you.

Only side effect I really had an issue with was some weird bar around cairo dock, it's not there with awn, so I'll use that for a while and see if I'm happy...
