That usually means you have two package managers open at the same time.

i.e [Synaptic Package manager,Update Manager or Aptitude or Apt-get]

If you use those commands in a terminal, make sure other package managers are closed first.Even running "sudo apt-get update" and then sudo apt-get upgrade" can cause this problem.Give it a minute between commands.

Good luck

Did you edit the sources.list file manually?

slakkie
September 21st, 2010, 01:03 PM
Try a different mirror:

sudo perl -p -i.orig -e 's/in.arch/pk.arch/' /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude keep-all # this is because you used apt-get
sudo aptitude safe-upgrade
