The vostro v13, not included on their Ubuntu page, but on their small business page. Was browsing the other day and saw it.

Seems sweet. $399? Seems like a killer deal for a good ubuntu laptop.

Why do they need to hide such a great product I wonder. They do not want Microsoft to find out they are selling competing product? Open source are meant to be open and not hide.

Yep, a conspiracy that leads directly back to Michael Dell.

Supposedly they're going to expand their ubuntu offerings. Let's hope they advertise better for people that want to program in open source.

I noticed a couple of things about this one. On the overview tab they have

Have Memory to Spare: Run Windows® 7 (http://content.dell.com/us/en/bsd/windows-7-business.aspx) effortlessly while performing everyday tasks even faster with support for up to 4 GB5 (http://www.dell.com/mc.ashx?id=technotes:4gb-or-greater-memory&c=us&l=en&s=bsd&modalwidth=400&modalHeight=150&ovropac=0&modalscroll=yes&modaltarget=div&modaltype=tooltip&position=bottom&title=Important%20Details&flip=false&eventType=rollover) of Double Data Rate 3 (DDR3) SDRAM memory6 (http://www.dell.com/mc.ashx?id=technotes:graphics-and-system-memory&c=us&l=en&s=bsd&modalwidth=400&modalHeight=150&ovropac=0&modalscroll=yes&modaltarget=div&modaltype=tooltip&position=bottom&title=Important%20Details&flip=false&eventType=rollover).

and on the Tech Specs tab under Operating System they have

Red Hat® Ubuntu® 9_04

and if you click select it also lists Red Hat Ubuntu 9_04

The model has different versions. It can have both Windows or Ubuntu it seems.

Dell does this little thing where they put the cheapest price on the front but none of the details till you click.

the $399 model comes with a Intel® Celeron® M 743. Which is NOT something you want in a laptop, they are sooooooo slow and outdated (about 5-6 year old technology IIRC)

The one with the decent processor is $599, but it only comes with 2gb or ram..

^ is my laptop, and a much better deal. It comes with windows, but of course, you can install <your distro> :).

The model is not hidden: http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/linux_3x?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs Take a look at the bottom left hand part of the screen.

There is also a choice on this one:
