So i have around £600 to replace my 3 year old systems organs and i've been weighing up the pros and cons of both the AMD and Intel builds i've come up with. And so far the Intel is the clear winner.

So anyway, here is what i had in mind

AMD

Intel (Gonna get another 460 and SLi them)

I'll be using it for a mixture of compiling in linux and gaming in windows.

Oh and i'm not worried about ATi drivers in linux, since i don't do much graphic intensive stuff. I'd say either builds are overkill for what i do in linux. So i'd appreciate any suggestions, things you might change or which would be better.

I think the 470 has been getting rave reviews, but it came out shortly after I bought my 480 so I didn't read too much about it. I prefer Intel myself, and I believe they currently give more bang for the buck. One thing I would consider in your position is the PSU, you're getting some power hungry components.

I've got an 800W psu at the minute, it should be sufficient :D

Yeah i'm just gonna buy another 460 in a few weeks and SLi them, instead of splashing out for a 480.

I just want to say, I have very good experience with Asus MB's with nForce chip sets. Never had a problem there, and I always go for nVidia GFX. Never really got the ATI cards to work for me in Linux.
By the way, good choise to buy a separate CPU fan for the AMD, the boxed fan is noisy like a jet plane ready for takeoff.

Yeah if i got the AMD i'd be overclocking it to at least 1090T levels, hence the fan...And i heard about the stock amd fans, scary!

Unfortunately there don't seem to be many nForce AMD mobo's around these days, and the few that exist, lack a lot of features. And i like that the Intel boards support both SLi and Crossfire. AMD are just monopolizing the AMD motherboard owners into getting ATI/AMD gfx cards. Which is logical, but i wanna have some flexibility.

Still leaning towards the Intel build atm, and can't see much reason to get the AMD one anymore :p

I was using ATi on linux a few years ago, and it ran games in wine better than the Nvidia card i replaced it with (X800 XT & 7800GTX).
