Strange black bar on desktop

I noticed yesterday, after what must have been the most recent updates, that my display now has a dark striped bar running down the right hand side of the display.

It runs between the indicator applet and the deleted items bin on my standard Gnome desktop. I know it's not my monitor since I can see both of those items but maximised applications will not fill this area, even though the cursor is visible there.

I've tried changing a number of display options but to no avail.

Any thoughts anyone?

Still no joy in fixing this.

It doesn't appear on the login screen, only once I'm signed into my profile does the bar appear.

Seriously, anyone, any ideas?

I am having the exact same problem. What video cards are you running. I have two ATI HD5770

That's another panel you made by accident.
Right click it and select "Delete this Panel"

Yep. Despite the weird appearance, it's just an empty panel.
