It's a lot easier to use for new people than Synaptic. ;)

It is customizing Apps that will customize the desktop. Well, for the others, You could go for GIMP for picture editing and creating, Thunderbird for email always on your computer, and Screenlets are all nice to have. Those are just a few. Let me check.............

wojox is right. Nothing makes Windows people drooooooooollllll eeeraaaggghhh than Compiz Cube with multiple desktops and transparencies.

Open Office has the ability to save as .pdf faster than even Adobe can do it. Then again, the Windows version of Open Office can do that too.
