I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04. Now after rebooting I don't get the grub menu anymore nor can I get into ubuntu or vista (I used to dual boot between ubuntu and vista). I get to a black screen with an blinking cursor. Can anyone help me with this?

It seems most likely that the grub 2 didn't get properly installed with the upgrade. It should be fixable from the 10.04 live cd - read the instructions for reinstalling grub 2 in the following - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling GRUB 2

Method 1 outlines the easiest way and should get your system back in order. Keep posting here if you have more trouble. Good luck.

I followed the steps as indicated and got the following after rebooting.

Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported
For the first world, TAB lists possible command completions.Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions.

Unfortunately I am working blind here. It would be helpful to see more of the situation.

If you would, go to this site: http://sourceforge.net/project/platformdownload.php?group_id=250055

Run the script and post the results of the Boot Info Script here.

Thanks for the help here is the info that came with running the script. Don't know what info you would need exactly so I posted the complete info.

###### Display version and date of the script when asked:
# ./boot_info_script -v
# ./boot_info_script -V
# ./boot_info_script --version
if [ x"$1" = x'-v' ] || [ x"$1" = x'-V' ] || [ x"$1" = x'--version' ] ;
then
echo "boot_info_script version $VERSION"
echo "Dated , $DATE"
exit 0

folcane,

It looks like you posted the script instead of the script results. What we would like to see is the contents of RESULTS.txt, which should start out with something that looks like:

Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010

============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================

=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in
partition #1 for /boot/grub.
==> Syslinux is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb

Note I've put code tags around my entry (and yours) so it is easier to read. You do this by copying the text into your post, then make sure it's highlighted and press the # icon in the post's menubar. It inserts the tags
at the start and at the end.

To run the boot info script do this:

Boot the Ubuntu Live CD/USB. Choose "try ubuntu without any changes", when the desktop loads come back here and do the following:

1. Download the boot info script. There is a link in my signature.
2. Once downloaded move the boot info script to the desktop.
3. Open a terminal and run the command
sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh

This will create a RESULTS.txt file on the desktop. Paste the entire contents of that file back here. Once pasted highlight all text and click the # sign on the toolbar to place code tags around the text.

See here (http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/) for more info on the boot info script.

OK, now we are getting somewhere. Your 10.04 is apparently install on sda7 (the uuid also corresponds to menu boot line). The grub 2 boot loader currently points to sda6. To reinstall write the folowing commands to a terminal:

sudo mount /dev/sda7 /mnt

Then:

sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda

Then reboot - everything should work fine. Let us know how you make out.):PT

Your windows partitions also have grub installed to the windows boot sector which has to have windows code in the boot sector for sda1 & sda3, but you also seem to be missing part of the windows install:

Fix for most, a few have other issues, better than windows fix in many cases as it also fixes other parameters:
This has instructions on using testdisk to repair the install of grub to the boot sector for windows from Ubuntu or Linux LiveCD.
http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/bootinfoscript/index.php?title=Boot_Problems:Boot_Sector

I think ronparent has a typo, he used + when it should be =. (Looks like an extra shift press)
Install MBR from LiveCD, Ubuntu install on sda7 and want grub2 in drive sda's MBR:
Find linux partition, change sda7 if not correct, and/or even sda if sdb wanted:
sudo fdisk -l
sudo mount /dev/sda7 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda
If that returns any errors run:
sudo grub-install --recheck --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda

One of your windows partitions should also show this in the list of boot files:
/Windows/System32/winload.exe

I do not see it. Is the actual windows install missing or did the script just not find the winload.exe and the entire /windows/System32 folder?

I've corrected the typo in Post #9 since the author is offline.

oldfred - you wrote 'sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda'. You do need the extra / directly after /mnt. Why I don't know except that without it I get a failed grub install?! Check method 1 step 5 in this reference: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling GRUB 2

Also sda7 is correct according to the posted grub.cfg.

edit: Thanks for the correction drs305, also for the notification - I first thought I was going crazy when I couldn't find the typo.

I reinstalled Grub2 on the sda7 which was correct. After rebooting I get the grub menu and can get into ubuntu. When choosing to load windows I get the blank screen and blinking cursor. I tried the method suggested to fix the windows boot problem by running testdisk in ubuntu. But received an other error msg: [ A valid NTFS Boot sector must be present in order to access any data; even if the partition is not bootable]. From what I could find on the net indeed there is a part missing from the windows files as oldfred suggested. I try to see if this can be fixed with the windows recovery cd which i'm downloading right now. Or do I have to reinstall windows with the HP recovery disk?

As oldfred said, windows recovery is your best bet.
