installing ubuntu 10.04 onto an extrernal HD

I have a formatted empty external hard drive, where I wish to make two partitions, one for ubuntu and one for music and film files. If i run the ubuntu installtion program will it automatically give me the option of installing itself onto the external hard drive????? Or is there a chance that it automatically installs to the c: of my main internal HD???

I had the same worries when I first thought about installing Ubuntu. Are you planning to install 10.4? If so, you will be given the option of choosing any drive currently connected to your PC and how much storage space is left on that drive.

Vulcan is correct.

When installing you'll be given the option of selecting which hard drive you wish to use. So long as your external hard drive is connected theny you can install to it. If you only want to use half of the drive for Ubuntu, then you can make partitions and resize them to meet your needs during the installation process.
