I'm not too sure on this but 'K'Ubuntu isn't named Kubuntu because it uses KDE but because Kubuntu is infact a real word also.

PS......Why is Ubuntu not called Gubuntu? This has been covered before. Ubuntu is the main distribution. Kubuntu and Xubuntu are derivatives, indicated by the extra letter. It doesn't make sense to imply Ubuntu is a derivative of... Ubuntu.
