Check out the specs side by side:
http://www.pcworld.com/zoom?id=204779&page=1&zoomIdx=1

With front and rear cameras increased ram and the ability to use a Bluetooth device or speaker phone this makes the current model iPads obsolete.

This is a tablet type device practical and one I will be buying.

Nice that this will come with Android 2.2, upgradable to 3.0.

I will get it if it's about $100-$200 less than the iPad, and I didn't have to pay for a phone service. I haven't run into one public place that didn't have open wireless internet.

Ahh, The Poll Speaks! lol :D

Galaxy Tab, in a heartbeat.
I wouldn't keep an ipad if it was given to me for free.
(tho i might keep it for a few minutes~ just to sell it to some sucker for apple products, to put towards one of these galaxy tabs.) lol

Niice one Samsung! <3

Well if this (http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=201135) is true, then I might have to consider the iPad more. I found a couple of other websites saying it's in the $800-$1000 range. That's a bit pricey.

Rasa1111
September 3rd, 2010, 09:10 AM
well, it is better.
Why wouldn't it cost a little more?
I mean, definitely pricey.. and too rich for my poor butt..
but if I was going to make the decision to spend hundreds of dollars on such a device..
Why not choose the best one, and pay a little more for it?
Rather than getting the p.o.s and paying a bit less?
lol

Typing from an ipad as of now... Got it earky august.. I must say, it's pretty handy to have. Bye bye laptop..

But im going with the samsung because its specs, aside from the screen, makes the ipad obsolete. It has to be around 600-700 with NO CONTRACT! The contract is the true deal breaker...

Higher price != Higher quality

The hardware specs it has isn't that much more than the iPad.

I'm thinking about just getting the Archos considering all I would be doing is surfing the web, and it has some Android apps on it. Also it's cheap.

The Galaxy Tab can indeed be thought off more as an extra-large smartphone. It will be sold through carriers -- large ones in the United States, Europe, Asia, and China, Samsung said, hinting that Verizon is a likely option. Indeed, unlike the iPad, there's no version that doesn't have 3G wireless networking and a carrier plan, though Samsung said such a move was possible with future models.
The Galaxy Tab is the first of a series of products that will span a range of prices, Hong said. "Next year, you might be able to see a variety of different tablets coming from our company," Hong said.
Samsung wouldn't reveal prices, leaving that up to telecommunications companies that would bring the Galaxy Tab to market, but it will be competitive, said DJ Lee, senior vice president in charge of Samsung Mobile global sales and marketing.
"Our business model is to go through global telephone operators," Lee said. "The final price setting, including the rate plan, will be finalized by the rate plan operators. We cannot give an exact number. We are working to keep a very attractive and competitive price to offer the end user."..."Samsung became the world's largest electronics company because of our strong hardware design and the connectivity of devices," Yoon said. "Over the past [few] years, that strength has extended to the software and applications that bring these to life."http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/gaming.gadgets/09/02/cnet.samsung.galaxy.tab/index.html

I'd buy one if Google shows some support and excitement about it.
Google doesn't seem to be good in showing they are excited about their own products.

It's like this: "If you like it... good! If you don't like... no problem"!

It's based on Android so they should be promoting it.

I didn't see any use for the iPad, and I don't see any use for the Galaxy. So I won't be buying one.

Apparently you did! Thought that was pretty clear. You said there wasn't, there is.
One ends a USB, other yes proprietary but it's a USB connection.

There is no USB slot on the device itself.
Well actually there is. I think what you mean is that the device doesn't use one of the pre defined USB connection hardware interfaces and instead uses a proprietary Samsung hardware connection at one end.

Please feel free to correct my statement if I have misinterpreted your previous post.

Now that we have that cleared up, my second statement still holds true and so does part of my first point in it being proprietary and a lack of usb port[s].

No that's FUD. It DOES have a USB connection.
If we examine the evidence. There's a lead. At one end it has a standard USB plug. The other is a connector which plugs into the device. That's a USB connection.

Without having held it and tried it (perhaps you have and can offer some deeper insight as to why I am wrong) then it looks to me like a fairly standard USB plug at one end which means it will slip into my laptop USB port nicely me thinks.

As you can see, USB connections can be made using a variety of differing hardware interfaces.

My wife got a DroidX last week, and honestly I really love playing with it in the evenings at home. I don't want a phone with the monthly costs, but I'd love a stand-alone Android device with a larger screen that can run all the same apps her DroidX can

So I'd get one if:
- It's fully authorized by Google to access the Google App Store with access to all the same apps currently available to the DroidX
- Price range is between $200-$300
- Can support an add-on Keyboard (preferably not using a proprietary dock)

As for the price, I think that'll be the breaker because Info Week is reporting it could be over $1200 (http://www.informationweek.com/news/hardware/handheld/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=227300206&subSection=News)!!! I paid around that for my laptop which is rather powerful and has a 17" screen. If they roll out this device at any cost over what the iPad is selling for, they might as well just not release it. The only market that would invest in such a device at that cost would be businesses for niche applications.

Yep, it's clarified that there's a USB port. An Apple-esque proprietary interface UTILISING THE USB INTERFACE at one end and a standard plug at the other.

I agree, it looks like it does have full USB support:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/204581/samsung_galaxy_tab_vs_the_ipad_the_tablet_battle_b egins.html

And finally, there's the issue of USB support -- namely the fact that Apple's iPad doesn't have it. If Samsung is smart, it'll offer full USB connectivity on its Galaxy Tab to further set the device apart.

Edit: Yikes, just reread it - doesn't say it does support it, just that it'll be smart if Samsung adds it. N/M...

Galaxy Tab Has Smaller Screen, Similar Features to Apple's Device; Likely Cost Is $200-$300

While a price hasn't been set, Samsung product executive Hankil Yoon said in an interview that it would likely retail for between $200 and $300, although the final price would vary depending on different carrier subsidies.

Mr. Yoon expects to ship 10 million units and take a third of the global tablet market next year.

Two things trouble me about the Galaxy Tab:
* No USB port on the device to plug in a USB device such as a portable drive, mouse, a11y aid. There is the databox, that is a separate accessory;
* aGPS. Nothing about GPS capability when there is no network --- phone, Internet, or otherwise;

If Verizon offers it in the united states, expect it to be locked down, if not more locked down than the iPad is.

I think I'll wait till the Galaxy tab has been out for a month, before deciding which is "better".

No need to worry. According to Engadget's preview (http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/02/toshiba-folio-100-preview/), it's not even coming stateside. They also said it feels cheap and that there's no official word on access to the Android market, which if true, means it's dead in the water upon release.

Good news for those of you interested in picking up the Galaxy Tab announced last week. According to Samsung product executive Hankil Yoon, the Android 2.2 tablet could sell for between $200 and $300 when it debuts with wireless providers. Here's the problem I have, and it's a big issue. It may be $200-$300, but that's through a wireless carrier, which means if you want some usefulness out of it, you'll probably be paying $50 a month. I don't want that. I don't own a cell phone nor do I care to pay $50 a month so that people can know where I am and contact me and any time they feel like it. If it was that price, and it had a Wi-Fi version then I would get in a heart beat. For now the Archos, or the new iPod Touches look very appealing honestly.

Since you don't even want a cell phone it is obvious this is not the device for you.

It works for me because one of the main problems I have with all smartphones is they are too small to be practical, since I already use my Bluetooth device and/or speaker phone to talk on the cell phone (I don't hold the phone to my head)...this solves the problem I find with small screens. That said I find the iPad too big, and it is not pocket-able, nor is it made to make phone calls on or take pictures with for that matter.

I have already talked to my wife about this and she has given me the green light to buy one and I will be giving her my Nexus One. I probably won't be buying the first generation Galaxy Tab as I will wait for Samsung to bring to market dual-core mobile processors which are due out the first quarter of next year.

I was really hoping for a Super AMOLED, but that was a bit unrealistic. If I had to choose, I'd go for the iPad for the WiFi-only version. But since I don't have to buy one, I'll stick with my Galaxy S phone. It has a large enough screen to comfortably watch my video podcasts, Youtube videos, and browse the web. The viewing angle, brightness, and contrast of the Super AMOLED screen is hard to walk away from. I treat it like a tablet and have not missed my slow, fragile, battery-hogging laptop.

512MB of RAM, Android 2.2 Froyo OS and WiFi b/g, along with 8GB of onboard storage and a microSD card slot. There’s also a mini USB 2.0 port, speaker and optional integrated 3G. The multitouch-capable display runs at 1024 x 600 resolution and there’s an HDMI port too.

Hardware specs are nothing without the software to back it up. However android systems have good software so I think they will win. The hardware is cheap to make so Android vendors will easily be able to undercut Apples rip-off prices, providing a better product for less.
