i had installed ubuntu 9.10 on a dual boot ubuntu linux system having windows and ubuntu 9.04 then i tried to remove the swap partition of the previous ubuntu 9.04 and resize the ubuntu 9.10 partition using ubuntu livecd now i am getting grub rescue prompt showing unknown file system
this is the output of fdisk -l

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 13003 104446566 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda2 13004 38913 208122075 f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/sda5 13004 26006 104446566 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda6 26007 33203 57809871 83 Linux

/dev/sda8 38696 38913 1751053+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris

now when i try to sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda7
i get this error

grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea.
grub-setup: warn: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and its use is discouraged.
grub-setup: error: Cannot read `/grub/core.img' correctly

i also tried running bootinfoscript and following is its output

The bootscript shows that GRUB is looking at sda8 which is the swap partition; that is why you are getting errors.

To reinstall GRUB2, boot the Karmic (9.10) CD and reinstall following this guide:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling%20from%20LiveCD

The first method is the easiest. in my opinion.

You want to mount sda7 and install GRUB to sda.

Don't forget to run
sudo update-grub after rebooting

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
