Samsung N150 Laptop

I installed WICD. I can see all the wireless networks, and wired works fine, but everytime I try connecting to a wireless network it says, "Unable to get IP"

Can someone help me remedy this? I am very new to ubuntu so I have no idea how to do anything...

When I go to Network Tools, I see:
Network Device: Loopback interface
IPv6 - Ip Address: ::1, Netmask: 128, Scope: Host
Network Device: wlan0
IPv6 - IP Address ::, Netmask 0, Scope Unknown
IPv4 - IP 0.0.0.0, Netmask 0.0.0.0

Help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

What is the output of ifconfig in your terminal? Also, what distribution are you using? To find out, in a terminal type,
lsb_version -a.

we know now you got atheros and atheros is one of the best chips

first at all there is a button swich on and off network press it and try to connect to network if u cant connect than press it again and aagain try to connect if it doesnt work follow this steps:

open this web
http://wireless.kernel.org/download/compat-wireless-2.6/

and download from the bottom latest driver

it is called

compat-wireless-2010-09-01.tar.bz2 (http://wireless.kernel.org/download/compat-wireless-2.6/compat-wireless-2010-09-01.tar.bz2)2010-Sep-01 21:03:212.5Mapplication/octet-stream
u need just one cuz on that page is many drivers theyre all the same there is many cuz this one driver is updated every single day u need just one the latest one from the bottom

after you download it

extract it to whatever u want to

and cd to that directory

than make
and sudo make install

it will take a while cuz in this single driver u will get support for very many wifi and bluetooth devices

than restart you laptop

and the new driver will be installed

after u rebooted try to connect to internet it should work staright away

but if it doesnt again try to press the wireless button switch in your laptop

and than try it again if it doesnt work come back

in the future if u would like to update your driver just download the newer one and do the same as above make and sudo make install

a) how do i do cd? say i extract it on the desktop, what are the exact commands i need to do this? i am really sorry but i have never done this before so i dont know how to install things yet.... and what is the command for sudo make install?

b) if i can see wireless networks in wicd shouldnt i already have the driver installed?

open the web click on the file it will show two options click save.

in 2sec it will be downloaded to your downloads

look on the top of your screen u see your panel there are places click on it open downloads

there is the file u downloaded right click on it scroll down and extract it

after is extracted open terminal and type cd /home/name of your system/Downloads/name of the file you extracted

and after that just type make and after it finished type sudo make install

if u have still probs come back

if u see networks it mean your wifi is switched on thats funny for me cuz my wifi does work and i have ath like u and compat like u.

what about windows ? do u have windows or any other OS ? can u connect to the internet over there ?

if so when u boot ubuntu and u try to connect to the internet do u use encryption? wep or wpa? can u try to connect without encryption? or direct connect without wifi?

nchung1988
September 6th, 2010, 07:32 AM
i typed in
sudo install linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucid-generic

i still ge tthe same error,

Mze
September 6th, 2010, 07:40 AM
sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucid-generic

or you can use the Synaptic package manager found under System>>Administration>>Synaptic package manager and paste "linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucid-generic" into the search window. Mark it for installation and install.

When using the Live CD, were you able to connect to any wireless network?

nchung1988

If you are unable to connect to the "dlink" network which is unencrypted, unable to come up with any solution unfortunately.

If you have a fast connection try a Live CD of another distro, e.g. Linux Mint and see if you are able to connect.

If a restart doesn't help, you might want to go with that option.

But like I wrote earlier give the Linux Mint Live CD a try too..
