I'm getting a little annoyed with the restrictions on my satellite company's DVR, so I've opted to use my aging, soon to be replaced desktop (the one with the destroyed graphics card) as a DVR/Media server. Little background: Computer is a P4 with a gigabyte of RAM, dedicated sound card, 200GBs or so of storage space, optical drives and until recently, a working nVidia geforce 4 card (pictures).
As far as what I want to do with it, basically I want to be able to record shows, link it to my home network to share with other computers, and play some rather high end games. I'm thinking of installing mythbuntu with a customized for TV fluxbox interface to maximize on the amount of free RAM for gaming.
I'm not quite sure what type of slot that is (sorry for my hardware ignorance), but I'd like a decent, probably used card to replace it with (S-video out for the TV!), trying to spend no more than the 30-40$ I'll have left over once I replace my new computer's integrated card with a Geforce GT220. I'm thinking something in the geforce 6000 or 7000 series or the ATI/AMD equivalent. It must have a linux proprietary driver as I'm also using it for gaming: Tremulous, quake 3, planeshift, DDO and LOTRO primarily. I've got no idea what to expect to pay for a cable-in card/USB device though.
How would you go about doing this?
