So, are there any alternatives to X for Linux? I often hear about other DEs that run on X11 or X, but I have read here and there that there are some alternatives that have picked up a little steam lately, but I know absolutely nothing about them.

What are these alternatives and how would you go about trying them? Are there any live distros that use anything but X?

I like X11, but I am just curious.

There is the Wayland Display Server (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayland_(display_server)). But it is not mature enough to replace X11. Work does seem to be proceeding quite quickly though which is a good sign.

Xorg still has a lot of life left in it. I find it astonishing that X has stayed around for such a long time and is still capable of providing a modern desktop experience.

I am very happy with X11. I think its just awesome.

Im just curious person. I like to see things I have not experienced.

Is there a way to test Wayland Display Server (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayland_%28display_server%29) on a currently existing distro? I am guessing its more difficult to swap out than adding KDE or E17.

The X Windows system was named so because it was one better than the "W" Windows system. I presume the "W" Windows system was Windows 1.0.

Makes sense, but like the first reply said, there are some alternatives in development. I am not saying there is a problem with X, but I am wondering if there are some other desktop environments I have not seen because I have limited myself to X.

Im just curious.

If the quote was about Y Window System, it really does exist.

I will also like to try out some other options than X. Downloading source of Y Window System but it is outdated. No development since 2006. Lets see how it goes...

Yep. Wikipedia learns me good.

Y11 hasn't been updated in like forever though.
