How does one install older software on Ubuntu?

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, but I am pretty new to linux. I am trying to figure out how to install an older version of Zsnes (1.31 to be exact) since the new ones don't support netplay. I have the older version source files downloaded from sourceforge.net but have no idea what to do with it. If anyone could spell it out for me (because I know I will probably have to use the terminal and I'm not very good with it either) I would be forever in your debt. Thanks!

Whether you can install it or not is going to depend on what dependencies it needs, what ones are used by the Ubuntu you are using. Start with what source forge says, then check it against the version of Ubuntu you are using.

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. How do I find out what dependencies it needs and what ones I am using? Sorry again for my ignorance but I just started using Ubuntu about a month ago. Here is the link I downloaded the program I want to install from: http://sourceforge.net/projects/zsnes/files/
