Its like the system goes to sleep. The only way I keep the progress bar moving is by starting and stopping a few apps a couple times a day.

What are your system specifications?
We need to know about things like RAM, graphics card, and disk capacity etc.

Might be either the HDD or the CD-ROM Drive or the CD-ROM Disc going bad. Or it might well be problem with the data cables running between them.

If it would've happened to me I would

1. Change the HDD and CD-ROM data cable.
2. Change the CD-ROM Drive if available.
3. Check disc for errors.
4. Memtest to ensure RAM is in good condition.

Regards.

I'll have to look up the specs but it did finally complete. However, I am seeing that any interactions involving updates or installing new packages takes for ever. After rebooting, the first thing I had to do was install the nvidia driver. What has been a task consuming only a few seconds has turned into 10 minutes. At this point I do not think its a cable problem. BTW, its got 1Gb of RAM.

Hardware problem can't be ruled out. Specs needed for better assessment. Slowing down of packages happened to me once when one of the bridges on motherboard was faulty.

1 GB of RAM is enough for general purposes.
