pipe to external console

Hi,

I am developing some programs in R. I usually use a kde distro but at work I have ubuntu which I am quite happy with.

I am familiar with kate and have toyed with gedit but I can't figure out how to do the following and hope someone here can help:

I have two monitors, side by side, that show different things. I want my editor (such as kate) to be on my left monitor and the console to be on the right, and I want pipe the commands from my editor to the console. Through kate, I can pipe to terminal but the terminal is always part of that specific kate window, what I want is to have a separate console for the actual R interface.

I am open to using other editors, general suggestions, etc.
