Write 10.04 OVER 7.04 without file loss?

Hi Experts..how can I install 10.04 over 7.04 (which is partitioned with XP) which I want to retain WITHOUT over writing XP and WITHOUT losing my data files stored in 7.04? Thank you.

Backup you data files, reinstall Ubuntu wiping 7.04 in the process, then restore the data files from backup.

yeah thats really the only way to go; other then that you could replace all the "feisty"? entries in sources.list with lucid but this is guaranteed to wreak massive damage on your system and is highly discouraged.
