View Full Version : What web design software do you like to use?

So I just realized that web design is a lot easier than I thought it was. Maybe doing it well takes some artistic talent, but everything is automated now which makes it accessible to people like me.

For a social networking portals or whatever you want to call them, what kinds of software do you use and why? What do you use it for? What kind of quirks does it have and what are some really cool add-ons or things you have learned to do with them?

How would you compare Drupal to Joomla? Can Word Press be as feature rich with all the add ons? Is there anything that can make PHPBB be more than a message board?

What chat software do you use in conjunction with any of the above?

Nano.

It writes.

ELinks.

It views.

GIMP.

It draws.

;)

But I do like a good FluxBB.

FluxBB looks great. However, since I am a noob I am going to stick with the software that they automatically support and download for you....it looks practically idiot proof and I dont really code.

All input is welcome though.

Im using dreamhost. I thought about using VBulletin but I hear Dreamhost is terrible about that. Their servers work best if you use their support software. This frustrated my last designer who did everything the hard way, coding the database by hand, but I got the same results in 10 minutes (that he charged me $250 for) for free using their automatic uploading program, all done from the dreamhost control panel.

Its SO EASY. I can create web pages with Drupal, a web forum with PHPBB, a photo album, a wiki.....anything I want, and I dont know anything.

I do want to learn as much as I can about my options though. Maybe there is stuff I can do with 1 program that I didnt know was possible.....If I can avoid it I would like to avoid forcing users to register more than one account for the same exact site.

Creating a website from ground up is definitely becoming legacy now that there's so many canned CMS/Blog apps out there. Unless you really need a static, nitch site I'd recommend using one of these canned apps (Nick_Jinn's reply lists most of the popular ones) and learning how to customize the template to suit your needs. Since most are in PHP, personally I use the NetBeans IDE with PHP support (http://netbeans.org/features/php/) which is amazing! It even connects to your databases which is nice. From there, given you're running a test site locally, you can completely customize any of these to look however you want, and most of them have detailed tutorials on customization.

Any advice on Drupal vs Joomla vs WordPress, or any combination with PHPBB?

Choices are great, but its good to hear opinions.

What type of site are you wanting to setup? If it'll only be you maintaining it and it'll be more blog based, then Wordpress is perfect for that. If you need something more robust with multiple contributors (full fledged website), Druple or Joomla! are both great (they are very similar, though I prefer Joomla! of the two). phpBB is a message forum app (similar to Ubuntu Forums), so unless you're planning on building a community like you see here it might not be needed. I would recommend you also check out Gallery (http://gallery.menalto.com/) if you need to share photos -- it's amazing! Druple and Joomla! both have plugins to add photo capabilities, but none are anywhere as powerful as Gallery.

If you're looking at CMSs, don't forgot to check out Textpattern.

Yes, I am creating a web community, much like this forum, not specifically for Linux or technology though.

I could use a mixture of Drupal for static pages, PHPBB for the message board, Word Press for the blog, and ZenPhoto for image hosting.....then who knows what for a chat area.

Could I do all of those things with just Joomla?

Vim, Nano, or Gedit for quick edits.
Under Windows I used HTMLkit (the version that didn't require Net framework) or Notepad++

For a blog, WordPress or Phpbbs or
vBulletin.

When I was in business I had a few business customers that just basically wanted brochure type websites, for which I used to use Macromedia Dreamweaver, then StudioMX 20004.

Retired at near the end of 2005, & dumped windows. A while back I decided I wanted a simple web page & I really didn't want to be bothered with the complications of Dreamweaver & the like, so I went looking to see what was available for Linux. I found a couple of tools that almost met my needs but there was always something missing.

I just wanted the simplest tool for the job & I couldn't find one that met my needs & ran on Linux.

So I thought ok, I'll install Dreamweaver off of the StudioMX suite on to OS X. Which I really didn't want to do, Dreamweaver was far more than I needed & I don't like OS X.

So after installing I had to activate it via the new owners Adobe. It knocked me back online, so I made the phone call & was told that I wasn't allowed to install it again I had to buy a new license!!!

I told the fellow on the phone that I was angry about that, & that it wasn't personal. I will now have to go & solve this problem via torrents.

I didn't.

I ended up buying (quite cheap) Sandvox, which runs on OS X, only. It is really quite simple to use & makes a good enough site for me.

I barely spend any time maintaining my site, so it probably has the odd out of date error that I've missed. (I did a little house work sometime in the last few months.)

Handy's Home (http://www.users.on.net/~thehands/)

I just had a look at the site & noticed that four of my Arch links are broken.

The image of the Arch forum screen was posted ages ago when some of us were organising ourselves into functional dark styles. I'll delete that image & fix the links next time I'm booted into OS X.

Old thread is old.

But I just created my site with Wordpress. It's pretty amazing. I used a premium theme, and it was great for static pages and blog pages, both. With all of the plugins available, there's not much you can't do with Wordpress.

My only complaint is that since everything is Php scripts, it makes it kind of slow loading. But I just installed a caching plugin that drastically sped it up. So now, I don't really have any complaints.

I prefer to use Netbeans IDE with PHP. It works amazingly. It even supports JSP pages.:P
