Could someone please tell me where to find the equivalent of /dev/dsp in karmic? It does not seem to exist.

Use padsp (or OSS4) if you really need to use an OSS app.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not set on using OSS, it's just the only thing I've ever worked with in the past. What is the current/new recommended approach if I say, want to stream my mic into a python program for recording? What do I need to open?
