Yes, but they are improving the interface (which looks very nice) and then they will go and spoil it by using that. At least use something half decent that will go with the new theme. New users booting into that are going to think there is something wrong with their graphics card....or eyes.

Horrible.

I voted no, along with nearly everyone else so far.

An update has obviously put this on my PC. I just changed my desktop wallpaper to display the new version and liked it even less. I then changed it back again.

Same as lucid , comment at the time "looks like a foggy night"

had hope the fog cleared , to see what was really there

I personally don't like it. The best wallpapers, I think, were the ones back when they had the brown theme, especially the wallpapers on 8.04 and 8.10.
I wish the art team would make cool backgrounds like the ones Fedora has.

Personally, I'm not liking the purple look in Lucid or Maverick. It's ok, but it doesn't hold a candle to the dark coffee 9.10 look :D

It looks like someone fell asleep on their mouse while using the orange paint brush in Photoshop.

The orange splotch is ugly ugly ugly. Come on Ubuntu art team! It's not that hard to make a wallpaper! They should do a contest for the default wallpaper and have the community vote for it. ;)

I might make a mock-up in the next few weeks to prove a point. (I have NO experience with GIMP/Photoshop by the way!)

It's absolutely horrible. It would be OK if they'd just get rid of the orange!!

Default settings matter. They're what any machine in a shop will show to a potential customer. If we want Linux to be available as a pre-installed option, we have to show the OEMs it can look nice.

schreber

Not a big fan of the orange splotches. It looks as if the designer/artist didn't give too much thought to improving an already acceptable default image and just said "the heck with it..."

Do I like it? No. Do I ever like a distro's default wallpaper? Rarely. Is a distro's default wallpaper important to me in any way? No.

V for Vincent
August 27th, 2010, 06:14 AM
I strongly doubt whether this is going to be the default. Ibex also had a hideous wallpaper until the RC came along. Sure, not everyone liked the final ibex wall, either, but it was a lot better than this one.

I haven't read ANY positive comments about this wallpaper. It is truly the worst wallpaper I've seen!

IF, with SO much feedback saying that it sucks, it STILL makes it as the default.... THEN Canonical should be replaced. Seriously, this is a COMMUNITY OS, LISTEN TO US! ;)

Denis Krajnc

Why do you guys struggle to make wallpapers? I made this one in five minutes. I'll play around with it some more. I mean come on that wallpaper is horrible.

I would also like to point out that I refuse to put the ubuntu logo on it, it's not against ubuntu, it's just that I detest logos on wallpapers.

The best Ubuntu wallpaper was "Dawn of Ubuntu". Google it. Was included in 6.06 but alongside the default.

It's beautiful.

There was a much better pure green version but I can't find it now.

Purple looks bad on orange and the number of white dots is overkill...looks like lucid lynx got bad acne...
Looks as if the majority of people agree with me that it looks bad...I certainly hope it is changed in the RC or final version.
...I am disappointed the designer of the wallpaper simple decided to add more white dots and add 3 ugly orange dots rather than making something new or simple changing the purple to orange or something...Even leaving it alone would be better...

...We assume it will be default because it is the default on the beta and all the alphas...it's on the installer, the log in and the desktop.

I am sure this is done to appeal to the crowd who like ugly desktop, you know, those austere people who say they use mostly the cli and that they wouldn't care for guis and hate anything remotely pleasing to the eyes because it is a "resource hog" and a distractions. It is a "resource hog" because they are still using machines with 256M of ram or less and are damn proud of it. :)

Austin25

I don't. It's just like the default lucid wallpaper, only with a clashing color of orange thrown in there for extra disgustingness. Here's my current wallpaper.

I thought 10.04's was bad, but Lucid's is gorgeous compared to this rubbish.

- It makes my eyes feel like they aren't adjusting right due to the blurryness for one.

- Colours are horrible

- Doesn't look fluid

I'm speechless! In a very bad way.
Good god, isn't there someone on the art team who can muster something more tolerable, let alone a work of art?

And if Canonical art team has no time or energy dedicated towards serious art design, why not adopt some of the community developed backgrounds and designs?

I really never understood the art direction of Ubuntu, but they seriously need to change it. That has to be the worst wallpaper out there. They finally make a half decent theme, and they ruin it with that wallpaper. I am actually quite angry that they think it is good.

Nah, it's because we actually use our resources well and don't care for spinning cubes.

Don't like the wallpaper though, imo Ibex's was the best. Or maybe "Dawn of Ubuntu" in 6.06.

And what's wrong with the CLI? It's incredibly powerful in the right hands.

The orange splotches are just hideous. I kinda like the purple-and-white. It's way better than mud-brown. (Polished mahogany would have been okay, but that's not what it was.)

For those saying "Oh, three clicks to change it" -- NOT SO. I changed the wallpaper. I finally managed to get the bootsplash changed. (It didn't "take" on the first three tries for some reason.) But the goddamn login screen is still that nerve-jangling mess and I just can't find how you change it.

Anybody here know?

Sure, it's stupid to spend time on something that goes by in a few seconds. But if it annoys you enough to want to get rid of it, and you try to, and you can't . . . now that feels really stupid and annoying and un-ubuntu!

The blank Purple is much better than this. First impressions for me still count, if this came up on a fresh install as the default background, it would make me think what else have they not taken the time or energy to think about.

I wonder how many WinXP user's have still got that green hill as their background.

I personally like it, it blends well with the Gnome themes in use since Lucid. In fact the GTK themes themselves are just as good and a major reason I like using Gnome in ubuntu.

As far as wallpapers go, the ubuntu default is an order of mangitude better than the KDE oxygen background, which I despise.
