Hi!

This thread is just about any improvements you can think of that can be on ubuntu (tell me if there is a thread already talking about it)

My opinions,
1. Smartboard compatibility (you know, like those school boards except "smart"
2. ... ill think about that one (had it on the tip of my tongue)

* Open source graphics drivers
* Nothing locked down (Like the new GDM, root account, etc.)
* Smaller bare system size
* Less crap installed by default, I know how to use a package manager to install a movie editor thank you very much.

I don't agree with that, having a movie editor by default is a good thing. Everyone is doing a bit of editing now, be it youtube or family movies and having it there is a bonus. You might know how to user the package manager, but new users won't. They can install their system and start editing movies straight away.

Voted so-so. I love Ubuntu, but like all software, it can always get better!

Implementing these would be a good start:
Idea #141: Include a graphical frontend to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst installed by default (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/141/)
Idea #142: Optional add-on CDs (not advertised heavily, but still available) (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/142/)
Idea #260: Auto-naming mountable drives (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/260/)
Idea #400: Prevent applications from stealing focus (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/400/)
Idea #2298: Repair package management failures (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/2298/)
Idea #2393: don't ask for default keyring password if system is set to autologin (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/2393/)
Idea #2560: Option to Propagate permissions of parent directory to new files (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/2560/)
Idea #2736: Graphical Interface to format Pen Drives an other Hot Plug devices (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/2736/)
Idea #3575: Online Ubuntu compatible - PC Hardware Store (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/3575/)
Idea #4225: Better dynamic icon placement (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/4225)
Idea #4755: Firefox/Mozilla: Synchronize "Open With" with Menu (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/4755/)
Idea #6106: Make so other people cant access your home directory (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/6106/)
Idea #6847: Physical Ubuntu Hardware Store (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/6847/)
Idea #11118: Display *** for password in the terminal (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/11118/)
Idea #14240: Configure Gnome with only one panel by default (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/14240/)
Idea #18488: Take Screen Shot is Quick Succession - Without Being Prompted (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/18488/)
Idea #22741: Add medibuntu repository by default and uncheck the box (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/22741/)

I would also add fix major functionality bugs after release, not just security bugs. If that's too much work, stop releasing every six month. Once a year would be fine.

And also don't change defaults (like window button placement) unless there is a good usability reason for doing so. Change for the sake of change is lame when there are so many legitimate changes (see above links) that still need to be implemented.

Oh, and these two bugs should be fixed before the next release:
network manager slow to reconnect after suspend/resume (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/274405) (originally reported September 2008--still not fixed)
Nautilus should have a superuser mode (https://bugs.launchpad.net/nautilus/+bug/12154) (originally reported January 2005--still not fixed)

By the way, that last one means prompting admin users for a password when making root changes instead of making them launch Nautilus as root with gksudo nautilus

^This.
Hardware is still an issue, but I guess that isn't Ubuntu's fault.

I agree, especially support for printers. Oh and I still haven't found something to replace Microsoft Money. ](*,)
