Hi all, I managed to get the liveCD to work on my machine (older P4 with only 256 meg of RAM) by using the acpi=off and a few other additional boot options. Problem is that the installation didn't copy these over to the HDD installation so that doesn't boot now. Well it does, but it black screens. So I attempted to get it to load by using escape/f8/tab etc on boot but I can't get access to the grub menu to add the commands and edit the stored config. Any tips? I tried editing the grub.cfg directly (aware that update will over-write it next time it's run, but I hoped it would get me in) but despite sudoing in the file remains read-only.

Any tips?

256MB is a little light for the full install.

To get the menu with only Ubuntu and using grub2 you have to hold the shift key down from BIOS until menu appears. You can use e to edit kernel line and add parameters but that will be just for this one time boot.

You need to edit /etc/default/grub to get it to permanently add changes.
