I want your opinion.

eclipse-3.6-1-x86_64 165.9M 48.8K/s 00:58:03

48K/s? Isn't dial-up 56K? Or is it 56k? Either way, it takes just a little less than an hour to download a 165.9M file. T_T. I think I should invest in getting my own DSL line, it will still be faster than what I'm getting now.

That's faster than dial-up. Dial-up was/is 56kbits/s.

No, a 56k modem would download speed of 5.6kb a sec at best :D
Most only got 4k a sec or so lol.

I don't miss those days..at all!

Dial-up is 56 kilobits per second, and it downloads at about 7 kilobytes per second. Your download speed, 48 kilobytes per second, is nowhere near that slow, and its equivalent to 390 kilobits per second (you multiply the bytes by 8, or divide the bits by 8 to get the other.)

I thought so. Still DSL would be faster than what I'm getting right now right?

I'm confused; the speed you posted implies you just have slow DSL.

Actually I have comcast cable. The max that I ever get is 1M/s, which is fair, but most of the time I get about 50K/s. I have a wireless connection, and when my family uses the internet, it makes it even worse. If I get my own DSL line, I can get a direct ethernet connection, which will be MUCH MUCH faster.

That is pretty slow for cable. I get on average 10Mbps, At work I'm spoiled with 55Mbps.

You might want to have your cable company check the lines going into your house. Also run over to speedtest.net and check your speeds currently. If you are not getting at least half of what they are selling you there is probalby a problem with your line.

This is slow but it certainly is not a 56k, trust me (edit: indeed it's a cable :P). I would have said UMTS (with very bad signal) or slow DSL, seeing from the speed.

PS: are you using Eclipse too? I like it even if my usage of Eclipse is, somehow.. very basic to say the most :D

I'm not sure many of us could cope very well on a 56k modem. Not these days.

Going from 12k to 56k was an amazing jump, back in the day. Now you need broadband just to load many websites.

Bah, you kids have it easy.

When I was your age we had a 2400b modem, AND WE WERE BLESSED!! Took 10 minutes to download a dirty picture at 640x480 with only 4 colors and you would only get 1/3 of it because your Mom would pick up the phone.

Blessed I tell ya....
:D

Even though I was around during that terrible time, I was young and my family didn't get internet until 2002

lololol 56k. What a terrible waste of time that used to be. Wait for several minutes for your ICQ msg to send!

My home connection used to get as high as 100-140Mbps! It was geek paradise. Then I moved and didn't have internet for 3 months. I'm happy to have around 5.5Mbps now, just to have internet!

I started off in late 90s (I guess it was 1999) with 56k. It may not be as slow as your first connection but I know how it hurts :D

In my area...
56k dialup= $9.95/mo
Cheapest dsl (768k)=$24.00/mo (with qualifying plan)
Decent dsl (7meg)=$65.00/mo (you MUST add their extra phone services to qualify)
Cable internet (MUST combine tv AND phone)=$95.00
You do the math. :)
Anyway, NoScript and AdBlock help us old dinosaurs get by.

Yes. I find it very useful. For most things I would just use vim. But with eclipse I can find syntax errors that I've made, and also I can use ctrl + alt + o to add imports. It's a nice tool to have around if you're playing with java.

Yeah, I may not have been around back then, but aren't you glad with what you can do now?
