What I want to do is have a CD or USB that I can make a computer boot from. Once the CD or USB boots I want it to load Ubuntu without having to install it. When Ubuntu loads it should automatically try and resolve a DHCP ip address. If DHCP is not available then you would be prompted to enter the ip address settings. Once an internet connection has been established it should load the web browser.

So basically what I want to do is have a small version of Ubuntu that I can boot on any PC, without interfering with the PC's hard drive, so that I can browse on the web.

Even though I work on Linux every now and then please assume I am a newbie. Could anybody please point me in the right direction to achieve this.

Thanks

Puppy Linux 5.0 is based on a slimmed down version of Ubuntu.

Run a search on Google, download and give it a try.
