I saw this (http://lifehacker.com/5614218/whats-in-your-backpack) article on lifehacker and really enjoyed reading the comments, so I thought I'd bring it to UbuntuForums.

My Backpack

Dell Mini 10v Netbook
Power Cable
USB Stick
Earphones
Binder w/ lined and graph paper
4 Spiral notebooks
Whatever text books I decide to have in there (I try not to carry text books much though, just keep 'em in my locker until class needs it)

Funny- not going to school and all- it depends on what I'm doing for that day-

When I'm biking to work:
shoes
socks
boxer briefs
shirt
pants
belt
pocket goods (wallet, keys, etc..)
my lunch for the day
misc. toiletries (for cleaning up after getting to work)

When doing a morning ride but driving otherwise, very similar, but sans shoes, since I'll be wearing those while driving the car...

Im still on holidays at the moment, so my backpack usually just has stuff for staying over at my girlfriends place, rather than school stuff;

Change of clothes
Wash bag (Manfume, Toothbrush + Paste, Hair Gel, Razer, Shaving Gel)
My Solio (http://www.solio.com/charger/) (a solar powered gadget charger, charges most phones, anything with a USB cable or 12v car power supply)
Phone Charger and Spare Batteries
A book
A DVD or two
Wallet
iPod + Cable

My backpack could be holding just about anything though. I once carried three stripped computers (mobos, RAM, HDDs, disk drives and PSUs) in it. Often has kit for repairing computers, a couple screwdrivers, cableties, and airduster etc.

Also carried a cat in it once, but it smelled quite bad after :)

I often work on the move and different locations so I have a portable office in my backback ....

Levono Laptop
Linux Format magazine
Folder with my notes
Couple of Ubuntu live CDs
Laptop power supply
Phone charger
In car phone charger
USB hub
Multi Card Reader
3G USB modem
Cat 5 cable
USB extension lead
Wireless mouse and pouch
Small note pad
2 pens, 1 pencil
2 USB sticks
Small paint brush (very useful for brushing the crap from my laptop keyboard)
Camera lens cloth (very useful for cleaning my screen)
Portable DAB/MP3 player
Another MP3 player
Ear phones
Mouse pad
USB leads for the Card Reader/MP3 player/Digital camera/phone
Modem cable (never used it)
500Gb usb external hard disk

Sometimes I also take my digital camera too.

And when I'm out and about, in my pocket I carry my phone, phone headphones, business cards, diary, wallet, keys and money.

I don't need an office! Although I do have one with full remote access to my pcs etc.

Along similar lines... RAP's Check List for Business Travel (http://www.national.com/rap/List/0,1573,35,00.html)

Bob Pease (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Pease) is a long time contributer to the trade magazine, Electronic Design. Met him once at a conference and he is, shall we say, a bit of a character.

Staying on subject, when I stuff my netbook into a carry case of some sort, it's usually accompanied by:

-- 4gb Dane Electric USB (retractable design, no cap to lose)
-- 8 gb SDHC card with another version of Linux (currently Mint 9)
-- Computer power supply
-- Spare battery
-- Travel power strip (3 outlets, self-storing cord), although this one is quite tempting (3 AC outlets, 2 usb): http://download.p4c.philips.com/files/s/sps2150wa_17/sps2150wa_17_rtf_.jpg
-- USB mouse with self-storing cord
-- Pen(s) and small notepad
-- iPod
-- Duracell USB Charger with Lithium ion battery. Comes with a nifty 6" USB/mini USB cable
-- Motorola Tracfone

Straying from the topic, here's what I took on a 6-week, 11,000 mile motorcycle ride to Alaska and back: Packing List (http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~libssd/Alaska2006/packinglist.html)
Basically, enough stuff to travel indefinitely.

Two pairs of dance shoes, extra socks (I dance in socks whenever the teacher lets me get away with it), a thumb drive with music and cue sheets on it for the dance classes I teach, two custom-made isos of "Robin's Linux Remix" LiveCDs (just in case - I've given alot of them away so I always keep spares around), and schoolbooks (depending on the time of day).

Always:

Cheap "laptop" backpack I got from either Wal-mart or Target four years ago: IT WON'T DIE!)
Lenovo Thinkpad X200s: Ubuntu 10.04, Matlab, Ruby & C/C++ coding, class notes, etc.
Engineering paper pad: I'm an engineering (and computer science) student plus the lines are thinner for "normal" writing.
Pilot Precise V5 black pens: the ONLY kind of pen I've bought for the past 6 years
Sharpie
Some reading book: right now it's "Advent of the Algorithm" by David Berlinski (I HIGHLY recommended it for computer science students)
Data cable for Droid Eris: for charging from laptop and tethering
8GB Flash drive: backup and transfers (Grsync is a must-have)
Sony earphones: a little expensive, but worth it every cent.
A couple of Ubuntu or Linux Mint discs to give out when people ask "what version of windows is that?!" when they see compiz effects...this happens a lot :p

Usually:

Laptop power cable
stainless steel water bottle
Bluetooth mouse and extra rechargeable batteries
Some programming book: right now "MPI - The complete reference" for my parallel programming course

Sometimes:

clothes for staying at the g/f's place

Fun post!:D

I used to carry a big backpack during my 1st year in college. Now I'm trying to remove some stuff slowly and bring only what i need.

a lot of papers and lab reports
extra bond papers
notebooks
a scientific calculator (engineers need this)
my wallet is also in my backpack
umbrella
2 pens
my school ID

Since i change my backpack to a smaller one, anything else, i carry them by hand, such as books and some drawing tools.

hmm.. lets see...
I use a 15' messenger bag, so...
- 15' dell studio laptop (taken apart twice, once to upgrade the video card, once to get the HDMI running after I stupidly wired it wrong)

- Sony MDR-XD200 (these are actually really good, except for the fact that I can't hear anything when I have them on....)

- Portable 3h multi-charger

- Motorola Milestone (some of you remember that I had a Xperia X10, but it sucked, so...)

- 1 super long ethernet cable (reminds me, this should not be here....)

- Kingston titanium lock for cellphone

- 3G card that I just bought for my laptop

- bag of sour patch kids... (yes, im not a kid, but I have a habit of snacking on the job...)

There used to be a fully collapsable high gain antenna in there for when I have to connect to the office from the middle of nowhere, but thats in my car.

I actually don't carry a backpack anymore, so I'll update my list:

In my Laptop bag
Dell Inspiron M5030
Power Cord
Earphones
Zebra M-301 .5 mechanical pencil
Extra leads
Highlighter
6 inch ruler
Cards (IDs, Library Cards, Bus Pass, etc.)
My phone (when in class)
Keys (when in class)
5 plastic folders (German, Geometry, Health, World History, English)

And that's about it. I keep all my text books, calculator, etc. in my locker. I don't usually carry a reading book as I only read when in class (so I carry it around during school, and it stays in my locker overnight).

In the car I keep at least two gallons of drinking water; at home I maintain a stock of 16 gallons (good to plan on one gallon per person per day for at least seven days)+food. Don't mean to hijack this thread, but emergency preparedness is really important and when you need it it's too late. In a backpack there's usually room for a few survival necessities.

Last time I posted in this thread it was dance shoes, my laptop and cables for hooking it up to the dance studio sound system, some schoolbooks and stuff.

So much has happened since then! I'm practically living out of that backpack now. To make a long story short: Financial disaster, homelessness, whole new situation. Mom moved in with her parents and I'm traveling (and living) with Papa in a big 18-wheeler. I do all my schoolwork online and will graduate next month. Living in a truck is hard on a dancer though, lol. And dancing at a truckstop tends to get alot of funny looks.

So what's in my backpack now? Mostly clothes and all my personal stuff. Laptop charger and 12-volt adapter, etc. No dance shoes. :( At least for now.

I go back and forth between a smallish messenger bag and a backpack. At the moment, my backpack has my insurance card, some papers that I need for my visa application, and a photocopy of a facsimile of one of the Bar Kokba letters, a business letter written two thousand years ago in Hebrew concerning military supply lines. My messenger bag has a really light hoody, a Bible, and an electronic buzzer to open the gate for my apartment building. When I'm actually going somewhere, my bag usually has:

Dell Inspiron Duo in a sleeve
Bible
Samsung SGH-C180 (my dumb-phone. sometimes in my pocket)
Creative Zen V Plus MP3 player
Klipsch image S4 earbuds
Black Uni-ball Eye fine point gel pens
iomega 320GB USB external harddrive
Dvoom miniature external speaker (love this thing!)
Goldbond powder
ibuprofen

Sometimes I'll take something to put on if I get cold.

In my satchel I generally have some files (I'm an attorney), a magazine, a pen, several pads of paper, and my android tablet (upon which I've installed Ubuntu).

In my computer bag, I carry my laptop, a magazine or two, external speakers (plus necessary cords), a power supply, my homebrew IR receiver (plus a serial cable), remote control, and occasionally my tablet. I use my laptop as a portable media center on the weekends.
