View Full Version : iPod-like Android/Chrome OS?

With all of these smartphones coming out, I was wondering if there is anything like the Palm PDAs of old, preferably running Android or ChromeOS. Even the WebOS would suffice.

I know Apple's iPod is probably the closest equivalent these days, but .. um.. it's Apple's (locked down). Doesn't that mean it has to use iTunes to update/install apps?

But that gives the overall idea of what I am looking for; something with wireless access, apps for organizing, contacts/calendar/etc., reading (downloaded pdfs, etc.) and games (me and the kids ;) )

I'd even take a tablet, if it isn't locked in with a cell carrier.

Maybe something will come out by the end of the year? I hear HTC is coming out with a ChromeOS tablet but I lost the link before I could read any specs.

Take a look at the Dell Streak, 5" tablet, works great!

Check out the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant. Might be like what you're looking for. That's also the name in Canada, it might have a different name elsewhere (mobile phone companies have a tendancy to do that).

Edit: Wait, that's a phone. I think you're not looking for a smart phone.

Ouch! $250 more if you want it un-attached to AT&T ($299 w/contract, $549 w/o) !?!! Otherwise, it looks pretty cool.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the idea of it being connected via 3G, I just don't want to pay for it right now if I don't need it.

The Archos 7 Home Tablet (http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/13/archos-7-home-tablet-review/) looks promising (and sub-$200, even better!) I just don't like the huge frame around the screen.

Wow! Just found the Velocity Cruz Tablet (http://cruztablet.com/tablet.php) which also looks promising, and it's available now! Plus it's only $299 and will ship in September.

And Augen GenTouch78 tablet (http://www.liliputing.com/2010/07/first-impressions-of-the-augen-gentouch78-android-tablet.html).

Ok, maybe there are more tablets than I first thought already available. But what about something smaller (phone sized +/-?) that isn't a phone?

It's a fantastic unit though and will have Android 2.1 officially next month, so it's a worthwhile unit.

Has wireless and all that it's perfect.

Nah, wait until MeeGo tablets come. I'm pretty sure there will be great devices.

Are there any planned non-GoogleOS based tablets to come out soon?

I know they are not planning it (or so they say) but an Ubuntu tablet would be awesome!

There is Archos 101, site says it'll sell for $299 and available in 10/10. It'll be running Froyo (Android 2.2), here:

Thee is a couple of youtube vids on it and it seems very interesting. Thoughts anyone?
