First off apologies for this reoccurring question regarding laptops. I need to buy a new laptop for work at the university. I have a linux desktop but would like to work from home quite a bit. I haven't bought a machine in 3 years and the last one I had was a 1st generation macbook core 2 due which was easy i.e., no choice ;-). From reading around about the different laptops it seems like a minefield with so many combinations.

My requirements are that I can run linux, 15" screen, relatively light weight, and a 2 core 64 bit processor and all for £400 or so. Am I asking too much? I highly appreciate your comments and suggestions

Can't you just use your old macbook? Linux works fine on them.

Thanks for the suggestion and its something I have been considering but with my work I do quite a bit of fieldwork where I camp and the casing of the macbook is a bit worse for wear and the monitor connection is quite temperamental. Additionally I would prefer a screen larger that the current 13.5" to program in and have multiple terminals open. I'm not overly a fan of multiple desktops like in Linux. I have found that 13.5" is not enough space hence the upgrade to 15" or so.

I'm not sure how much tweaking you'd have to do to get Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit working with everything, but it shouldn't be too bad.

I have a system similar to it, not sure how everything will work, but it's nice for under ₤400. But I'm sure we could help you get it up and going =D

This is a useful location for checking which laptops are Ubuntu compatible.

Why does System76 show only 2 compatible laptops in that list??
