I just changed my Windows Vista to Ubuntu yesterday. Today, I down loaded the Full Kubuntu package from synaptic package manager. Then, I downloaded the Plasma Desktop from Ubuntu Software Center. Now, how do I get the KDE Plasma Desktop top be my default desktop? And still be able to switch back to Gnome when I want to.

There are a lot of KDE applications available, but the desktop looks like it is still running the Gnome desktop.

Thanks for any help.

Have a look at this tutorial, skip past the installing bit that you have already accomplished.
