mouse free computing

I would like to be able to use my desktop with just my keyboard and no mouse use at all. I know how to go to keyboard shortcuts and set a lot of those but in firefox I can not figure out how to get to File Edit View menu bar without the mouse. Does anyone have any tips with this or is there another browser that you can configure the keyboard shortcuts for? Thank you for any suggestions at all with making this process easier. I am running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx.

Well, instead of using GNOME (the default Ubuntu user interface) you could try a minimalistic environment aimed towards keyboard use.

For example, take a look at DWM:

It's got a learning curve, but is designed to work without a mouse and be used with a keyboard. Works nicely on an old server box of mine.

There are several window managers designed specifically to reduce or eliminate the use of a mouse.

Ratpoison comes to mind, but there are others.

Fluxbox has a number of configuration options as well.

Note: Most of these WM require you to configure them to your preferences and IMO they are not as polished out of the box as the big 3 (gnome, kde, xfce).
