View Full Version : .mkv file doesn't play saying "Can't play a text file without video"

The title says it all really.

I recently downloaded a movie that has the .mkv file extension and the moment I opened it through Movie Player it says Error: Can't play a text without a video.

What does this mean? Ubuntu is not equipped to play .mkv extensions? I can't download VLC player either, saying that the player for 10.04 it isn't updated (I have the ubuntu netbook remix version).

That's bizarre. I have an .mkv video that plays no problem for me.

Perhaps it's because I have medibuntu installed. See:

did you install "ubuntu-restricted-extras" to get all the media codecs?
